Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training Program

Program Overview:

The Emergency Medical Technician Training Program is designed to prepare individuals for a career in emergency medical services. This program provides comprehensive training in the knowledge and skills required to become a certified EMT, capable of responding to medical emergencies, providing pre-hospital care, and transporting patients to medical facilities.

Program Duration: The program is one semester, 14 to 16 weeks.

Curriculum Highlights:

  1. Introduction to Emergency Medical Services (EMS):
    • Overview of the EMS system, roles, and responsibilities of an EMT.
  2. Anatomy and Physiology:
    • Understanding the human body’s structure and function to provide effective patient care.
  3. Medical Terminology:
    • Development of proficiency in medical vocabulary used in emergency medical settings.
  4. Patient Assessment:
    • Training in systematic patient assessment, including primary and secondary surveys.
  5. Essential Life Support (BLS):
    • Instruction and hands-on practice in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other basic life support techniques.
  6. Airway Management:
    • Techniques for maintaining open airways and providing adequate ventilation.
  7. Trauma Care:
    • Recognition and management of traumatic injuries, including bleeding control and immobilization techniques.
  8. Medical Emergencies:
    • Assessment and interventions for common medical conditions such as heart attacks, seizures, and respiratory distress.
  9. Emergency Pharmacology:
    • Introduction to medications commonly administered by EMTs in emergencies.
  10. Emergency Childbirth:
    • Training in assisting with childbirth in emergencies.
  11. Ambulance Operations:
    • Safe driving practices, vehicle operations, and patient transport considerations.
  12. Legal and Ethical Considerations:
    • Understanding legal and ethical aspects of providing emergency medical care.

Clinical Rotations: Hands-on experience through clinical rotations on ambulances that are NYS certified to apply learned skills in real-world scenarios.

Field Internship: Supervised field internship, allowing students to gain practical experience under the guidance of experienced EMTs.

Certification Preparation: Preparation for the New York State Practical Skills Examination and New York State written certification examination.

Target Audience: Individuals aspiring to become certified Emergency Medical Technicians, including those pursuing careers in ambulance services, fire departments, and other pre-hospital care settings.
